Organic Planet Worker Co-Op:
Winnipeg's only collectively-owned organic market
We at Organic Planet Worker Co-Op are committed to supplying the citizens of Winnipeg fresh organic produce, groceries, non-toxic health and beauty products and providing an organic/vegetarian deli. Whenever possible, Organic Planet purchases from local producers and from other co-ops. Local, fairly traded and certified organic products are preferred, as are smaller, more independent suppliers as well as locally produced goods and services. This reduces shipping costs, both financial and ecological, and ensures that our money stays in our community to support progressive local industry, workers and farmers. We are committed to the principles of Community Economic Development, and building a stronger, more self-sufficient community. Organics is an ever-increasing industry in Manitoba; one that benefits not only our environment and our economy, but our health as well!
We believe in the concept of worker ownership, and value the right of workers to exercise direct control over their workplace. Co-operation and consensus allow for each worker to have a voice in making the decisions that effect their lives on the job. We support other democratic co-ops and collectives in our purchasing and promotional activities.
History
Organic Planet Worker Co-op opened in May 2003 at a location that has been home to a retail food co-op for the past 25 years. Most of the founding members were young people with some experience working in an organic store, but little or none running one. Others had previous work experience in other Winnipeg worker co-ops. Together, we came up with a business plan and found support from a local credit union. Today, Organic Planet Worker Co-op has nine staff and seven members.
Organic Planet Worker Co-op- working for the health of our community, and our planet!
